Our Authentic Culture

What is authentic about YOUR teen subcluture? Does your generation have anything that it can call it's own? If there is nothing authentic about your culture, discuss how you feel about that. Does this even matter to you?

I believe that the authentic thing about our subculture today is the internet and the technologies that we now have. Our generation will be known as the generation of the ipods or of the internet. I have not always owned the internet, and I really didn’t get into the whole internet thing until high school. Now the internet has become a big part of my life especially since facebook was created. IPods on the other hand have a bigger influence over our culture it’s a place where many teens can go to, to be alone. I do agree with the statement that Hjelmgren said about how our generation has lost a lot of creativity because when I was younger I was entertained easily just by playing with crayons or chalk, but now I waste my time on things that do not matter like facebook. I just think that our generation has become lazy, and entertained by things that in the end do not really matter. This subject does matter to me because I am affected by it everyday, and we live by it.

Marketing Industry

"It's a shame that the people who are listening to you the most are only interested in you because they want you and your peers to buy their product."

With this statement I think that it is true. It is because the marketing industry is so smart to study our every move, and our interests which makes us more interested in their product. At the same time it puts things in perspective because I did not think that that was the way they try to sell things to us. The industry is smart because they do listen to what we want in order to make money off of us, and really that is the only way to really do it. At the same time it is disloyal to all of us because we trust the marketers and the people who sell us things, and yet they are tricking us to buy their product by advertising it with things that are "cool" to us. I just don't think that it is right for the marketing to take what we want and say and use it in a way against us just to spend our money on their product. Overall, this statement is very true in the sense that marketers are making money off of us, and are succeeding.

Welcome to the Family

These lyrics are basically about what it says family. Little Big Town is from the south and most southern families are very closely knit, then again I know a lot of families that are close and aren't from the south. Welcome to the Family is about this families sister who found another guy, and this brother is warning him that if he ever hurts her then he will regret it. I relate to this song a lot because when I brought my boyfriend to first meet my dad and my family they gave him a hard time about everything. My family is very overprotective of me and my sister so they try to warn every guy we bring home. This song is also more of an upbeat song rather than slow so that makes me like it even more because I run to upbeat songs. My personality has always been one that revolves around my family to make sure that everyone in my family is happy, which I know it isn't possible but I like to make sure. Welcome to the Family is extremely relateable to me in the sense that my family is exactly the way this song goes. Family is the real meaning of this basically explaing that their sister means the world to them, and they don't like to see her hurt.

Little Big Town

Little Big Town influenced many people in our generation. In many of Little Big Town's lyrics they talk about love and family many of the things that young people cherish. Love is a big issue with our generation because it seems like that is what many people search for. Little Big Town has a good image and a good example for many young adults they only talk about positive issues, and when women go to sing they sing about independence and not depending on men. Overall, this group has a big influence on our generation even though they aren't many people who listen to country, but the ones who are faithful country listeners are influnced by this harmonizing group. Especially by their vocals and their beliefs that many can relate to.

The affect of Elvis

Watching that documentary on Elvis made me realize that he had a huge affect on the world. Mostly he affect women because he basically told them that it was ok to move their bodies a certain. Elvis made women crazy about him, and it wasn't just his good looks that attracted women to him. He made the women comfortable in their own bodies and with their sexuality. Back in those days women weren't supposed to be crazy and moving their bodies a certain they were supposed to be calm and prepare for raising children. Elvis made a huge generation gap because the elders were opposed to Elvis' soulful music and the way he rebelled against authority. He not only made in difference in many teenage girls, but also made a difference in music. Elvis was the first man to sing soulful blues which some songs were written by black artists. This was a big deal because this was when the world was segragated by color. All Elvis ever heard was the music that the artists composed. It seemed like to him nothing else matter but the music.

First Favorie Singer

My first favorite singer was Selena. I come from a big mexican family and that was just one of the main singers that my family listened to. My sister and I always listened to Selena day and night. I was about 7 years old when I started listening to her, and then the movie came out and I became obessed not only with the songs but with the movie. The most important thing about Selena to me was that I felt really close to my hertiage and the culture that I come from. Mostly it brought me and my sister close together because we had something in common, which was rare for us.
